Printing FAQs

Question: How can I print a text file from Linux using lpr command in the same format as on the old printing service (two columns on a single page with a header)?

Answer: You should use a2ps command (included in SLC4 and SLC5 distributions) to format your text file before sending to the print server. Usualy your a2ps defaults are set in a way that it is enough to type:
         a2ps filename -P printername
If it does not print your file correctly, you should type a full command:
         a2ps -2 -m --columns=2 -b --left-footer --footer --right-footer -j --medium=A4 filename -P printername

Question: My printer does not print pdf files when sending them via lpr. What should I do?

Answer: Some printers do not support pdf format natively, that it is why they do not print them when sent to the print servers using lpr. Before sending them to the print server, you should convert them to PostScript:
         pdf2ps FileName.pdf | lpr -P PrinterName

Question: I have a printer which is shared among many people. We would like to have a separator page printed between printouts from each of us.

Answer: Separator pages are switched off by default and can be turned on by print server administrators on a request.

Question: I have Windows XP. I don't like balloon informing me that document has been sent to the printer. How could I disable it?

Answer (Advanced!):

  • Use a registry editing tool to navigate to the following key:
             HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings
  • Change the value with the following details:
             Data Type: DWORD
             Value Name: EnableBalloonNotificationsRemote
             Value: 0
  • Stop and restart the spooler service for the change to take effect. Open command line and type:
             net stop spooler
             net start spooler

Question: Acrobat Reader does not print all pages of my PDF document.

Answer: The PDF document you are trying to print has some syntax incompatibility with driver/model of your printer.
In order to resolve this issue, please select Print -> Advanced -> "Print As Image" option while printing. It will take much longer to print your document so it shouldn't be your default setting, you should set it only when you have troubles printing without this option on.
