Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (WLCG)

NCP was the first operational grid node (NCP-LCG2) in Pakistan and has been a partner of Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) project at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) since 2003. The WLCG project is a global collaboration of more than 170 computing centres in 40 countries, linking up national and international grid infrastructures. The mission of the WLCG project is to provide global computing resources to store, distribute and analyze the ~30 Petabytes (30 million Gigabytes) of data annually generated by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN on the Franco-Swiss border. The architecture of WLCG is based on Tiers with CERN being Tier 0 and Tier 1. NCP is maintaining a Tier 2 WLCG node. This grid node is dedicated to CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment under the MoU, which was signed between Pakistan and CERN in 2003.

Currently, the WLCG node at NCP has total 524 core CPUs/Job slots equivalent to 1591KSI2K and 441 TB (Raw Storage) of Disk storage which after RAID gives usable storage of XYZ TB. NCP has been provided 155Mbps of R&D connectivity by PERN-2 (HEC) to facilitate the data transfer between CERN and NCP.
