Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) - Guidelines
The Nanoscience & Technology Department (NS&TD) at the National Centre for Physics (NCP) provides advanced characterization facilities to researchers from academia, industry, and R&D organizations. To ensure efficient processing and high-quality results, users are required to follow the guidelines below.
Submission Workflow
Follow these steps to ensure your samples are processed without delay:
- Prepare: Use clean, contamination-free containers. Ensure samples are stable under ambient conditions.
- Download: Obtain and fill out the specific characterization form for each requested instrument/technique.
- Pack & Label: Secure samples in labeled Eppendorf tubes placed inside ziplock bags.
- Submit: Provide separate samples for each requested technique.
- Pay: Review the approved fee structures and confirm payment (Rate List).
- Receive Data: Results are shared in digital format once payment is confirmed.
Detailed Requirements
Sample Labeling & Packaging
All samples must be properly labeled and securely sealed in an Eppendorf tube, placed in a ziplock bag before submission. Sample Forms should clearly include:
- Sample ID / Name
- Applicant name & organization
- Relevant hazard information (if applicable)
Sample Submission Requirements
- Submit separate samples for each characterization technique requested.
- Ensure that the sample quantity meets the specific requirements of each instrument (see relevant sample forms).
- Samples must be stable under ambient conditions unless prior arrangements are made.
Note: Always refer to the specific instrument form for precise sample preparation and quantity requirements.
Characterization Request Forms
- Users must download and fill out the specific characterization form corresponding to each instrument.
- Forms must be completely filled with accurate and readable information.
- Incomplete or illegible forms will result in delays or rejection of samples.
- Each sample must be accompanied by its respective form.
Data Quality & Responsibility
- Users are responsible for providing accurate experimental requirements and background information.
- Incorrect or insufficient details may affect the quality of results.
Sample Safety & Compliance
- Clearly indicate if the sample is toxic, hazardous, radioactive, or biologically active.
- NS&TD reserves the right to refuse unsafe samples.
Turnaround Time
- Processing time depends on instrument availability, sample type, and workload.
- Following analysis, samples will be retained for a period of two weeks prior to disposal. Please note that NS&TD lacks the facilities for return shipment; therefore, users must coordinate their own sample collection.
Payment & Data Delivery
- Characterization services are subject to approved fee structures (see Price Sheet).
- Data will be released only after confirmation of payment.
- Results will be shared in digital format only (email, WhatsApp)
Best Practices for Submission
- Use clean, contamination-free containers
- Avoid moisture-sensitive exposure during transport
- Clearly specify:
- Measurement parameters (if known)
- Expected outcomes or objectives
- Provide contact details for follow-up communication
